Fit is the only thing that decides this

Measure all three dimensions, depth included

Length and width are the ones people measure. Depth is the one that decides whether a zip closes. Every zip-off cover on this page is cut for a bed 4 in (10 cm) deep; on a 6 in (15 cm) bed the same cover will not go round the fill, and there is no way to stretch it later.

The fitted covers work differently. Elastic all round the underside, like a fitted sheet, so they tolerate a range of depths but need the footprint right. Those are listed in inches, from 20 × 30 in up to 40 × 53 in.

Three of these go over a dog bed; the rest protect something else

The others are flat covers sized to something else: a sofa corner at 30 × 30 in (75 × 75 cm), a car seat or a crate floor, or a human bed up to 83 × 102 in (210 × 260 cm). Both kinds are useful and they are not interchangeable.

Washable and waterproof are two different claims

A removable cover solves cleaning. A coated or tightly woven surface is what stops liquid reaching the fill underneath. Some do both. Every listing here says which of the two it is rather than using the words as if they meant the same thing, because the one you need depends on whether the problem is hair or an accident.

The zip fails before the fabric does

On a cover coming off every week, that is the part under strain. A zip running along more than one side takes less load per inch and is far easier to work over the corners of a filled bed. It is worth looking at before the fabric weight.

Measure the bed, not the dog, and measure it three ways

Length, width and depth, all three, on the bed you already own. Depth is the one people skip and the one that decides whether a zip closes.

Do not use the size name from the original purchase. Size names are not standardised between makers, and a bed sold as Large by one supplier is routinely a different object from another supplier's Large.

Two covers, not one

A single cover means the bed is out of service every time it is washed, which is the reason weekly washing quietly becomes monthly. A second cover turns the same job into a swap.

This is the least glamorous recommendation on the site and the one that changes the most. It is also why these are sold separately rather than bundled: you probably need two of one, not one of two.

The second cover does not make washing easier, it removes the two days the dog has nowhere to sleep, and that is why the schedule survives.
