Dogs that sleep with their chin raised, or press their back into a corner, settle quickly on a couch shape — there is a back and two arms to lean into. The rim does eat into the footprint, so the flat part they actually lies on is smaller than the outside measurement suggests.

Which dogs get the most from them

The ones that sleep with their head propped up, or with their spine pressed against something. A sofa shape gives them both at once. A dog that sleeps flat out on their side uses none of the rim and loses room to it — a flat mat of the same footprint gives them more space to stretch into.

The inside measurement is the real one

On some designs the rim takes 10-15 cm off each side, so the usable sleeping area sits well under the box dimensions. Where that inner number is listed, it is the one to hold against your dog. Between two sizes here, the larger one is the safer pick.

For an older dog, rim height is worth a look — a tall side is a step to climb before they can lie down.
